About the Class

Step back in time as we explore the rich cultural heritage of the Ohlone people who first called Alameda home. Children will engage in hands-on traditional craft-making, participate in indigenous games, and learn fascinating stories passed down through generations. Our afternoon adventure takes us to Jean Sweeney Park, where we'll create beautiful dream catchers, participate in a nature-based scavenger hunt, and connect with the natural landscape just as the indigenous people did. Each child will create a meaningful handcrafted art piece to take home, inspired by indigenous techniques and traditions. Daily Structure: • Morning: Welcome circle with indigenous greeting customs followed by traditional art techniques workshop and native game instruction • Mid-day: Lunch and structured games at the park • Afternoon: Shell bead creation workshop using natural materials and closing reflection circle Take Home: Each child brings home a handcrafted indigenous-inspired art piece to serve as lasting reminders of Alameda's rich native heritage Details & Logistics: • Drop Off: 8:45–9:00am | Pick Up: 4:00pm | Extended Hours: 8:30am–5:30pm. • Lunch: Bring a labeled water bottle, one hearty snack, and a nut-free lunch. • Age Group: We serve kids TK-5th grade, most of our campers are K-3rd grade • Attire: Comfortable, movement-friendly clothing.
