About the Class
Martial Arts & Practical Self-Defense for Kids with Blackbelt Ryan Rochel Please note: While this class is available on a drop-in basis, we encourage kids to attend regularly. Each session builds on the last, and consistent participation helps children progress with their cohort. Living in the Bay Area means our kids are surrounded by energy, opportunity, and community—but it’s also important that they know how to keep themselves safe. This empowering class gives elementary-aged kids the tools they need to feel confident, aware, and capable in real-world situations. Led by Blackbelt Ryan Rochel, an experienced instructor who balances discipline with compassion, this class goes beyond kicks and punches. Kids will learn practical self-defense strategies they can use right away, along with the wisdom to know when and how to use them. In this fun, one-hour class, students will: Practice easy, effective self-defense moves—including how to break free from grabs or pulls. Build awareness and confidence to help them move safely through streets, parks, and community spaces. Learn peaceful conflict resolution, including when to walk away, run away, or ask for help. Train in a safe, encouraging environment that emphasizes respect, self-control, and peacemaking. This is a “come as you are” class—no uniforms required. Kids should wear comfortable clothing and be ready to move.
